NOTES:

Decided to help with the wild boolew evaluation. Aften owning Berry for a while now, I’ve wanted to learn more about boolews and this research expedition seemed like a perfect opportunity to do so. I figured that some of the marine or gilled Xeros may be better at evaluating the reef boolew than me, so I chose the coastal ones. They are even somewhat similar looking to Berry.

I did have to get another explorer outfit that fit the environment a bit better. I almost went in my normal outfit but realized how hard it would be to move in it when I got waterlogged. Got something a bit more form fitting and water resistant, and a cat that wouldn’t float away in the water. I might have to go exploring in other aquatic environments soon.

Started my evaluation at XXXXXX on XXXXXX. Used the kit that I picked up from ES HQ to test the pH, Salitlity, temperature of the water and temperature and humidity of the air. Took notes about any injured or sickly ones that I saw in my quadrant. Most of the (<90%) were healthy and lively from what I could see. Noted that the weather was mostly sunny, with a few clouds as well. See any additional notes on page 3.

I initially tried the capture and release method to count the wild coastal boolew. I know that I didn’t have tracking devices but I figured that the marking device that was included would work nicely. It did not go well. Too slippery. I ended up marking myself instead. Oops. I used the quadrant counting method and it ended up working a lot better. See page 5 for data entry notes.

Got the absolute cutest photo. See specimen photo attached. I showed this photo to my own boolew. They wiggled their whiskers and skirt in response. Adorable. I’m curious about how Berry would react to a wild boolew in their tank, but I know that mixing domesticated and wild animals isn’t a good idea. It leads to a lot of diseases spreading and I don’t want either of them to get hurt. Maybe I’ll try to get another egg from HQ in the future. Berry needs a friend. I’d have to get a bigger tank if I wanted another one.

I feel like I would love to come back out to Tidix-c II and see the coastal boolew and all of the other creatures of this area. I'd be tempted to bring some detritos for the little cuties but I know how important it is to not feed the wildlife. I’ll have to settle for taking more cute pictures and making a few drawings myself. I'll need to figure out a way to not get my sketchpad wet in the future.
