I took a little time to think about it, and other other way that our household reduces waste/energy usage is that we're able to afford to buy locally produced produce from farmer's markets for most of the year. While it is a luxury for many, food produced closer to home has a smaller fossil fuel footprint because of transportation costs, and can often be produced in less energy-intensive manners. (commercial fertilizers for large-scale farming often get their nitrogen from fossil fuel sources).
