Traits

Aposematic

Aposematic (Notable)

Species: Xero

Aposematic Xeros are quite rare, and not very much is currently known about why some feature this trait. The most notable visual feature of aposematic Xeros is that their skin is a very saturated, neon color, to serve as a warning of their potential toxins.
Scientists speculate that it is a leftover adaptation from their previously insectivorous lifestyle. These Xeros may have a pair of modified saliva glands that can deliver venom through grooves in their upper canine teeth. They have complete control over these glands, and are able to produce regular saliva the majority of the time, so it does not negatively impact their lives in any way. Even Xeros who do not posses venom are immune to its affects, so there is no cause for concern! However, not all aposematic Xeros are capable of producing venom; some are merely mimics!
Aposematic Xeros can also feature neon-colored markings surrounded with a dark outline for high contrast - however, markings of this kind are optional and are not featured on all Xeros with this trait.

EfaJvLGP_o.png?download=true DO: Aposematic Xeros must have a skin color that is within the red box area of the color chart (saturation & value above 80%). Neon-colored fur markings surrounded by a dark outline are optional, and do not need to be included on every aposematic Xero.

DO NOT: Xeros without the aposematic (or bioluminescent) mutation should not have a skin color within the red box area of the color chart.

This trait can be added to your Xero by giving them a Magma Pepper.

Dark Sclera

Dark Sclera (Notable)

Category: Eye Mutation
Species: Xero

In some animals the protective layer on their eyes is a darker color, possibly even black in appearance. This adaptation is theorized to hide eye movements in predators or even act as 'gaze camouflage' for social species hiding where they may be looking from others around!

How to get this trait
This trait can be added to your Xero by giving them a Mela Mela Drupe.
Bright Pupils

Bright Pupils (Notable)

Category: Eye Mutation
Species: Xero
In some Xeros, the tapetum lucidum that gives them such excellent low-light vision undergoes a dramatic mutation. Bright pupils are the result of this highly reflective tissue, causing it to reflect in such a manner to create this striking appearance! This trait allows a Xero's pupils to be lighter in color than the iris (the main colored part of the eye). The bright pupils can be any color, so long as they are lighter in value than the iris.

How to get this trait
This trait can be added to your Xero by giving them a Blanch Berry.
Horns

Horns (Notable)

Category: Body Mutation
Species: Xero

Horns are a rare trait for a Xero to have; these keratin-covered bones grow in pairs from the top of the Xero's head. Much like the antennae, horns can be many different shapes and lengths. Horns can only be found in symmetrical pairs and only on the top of the Xero's head; for keratinous growths on other areas of the Xero's body, see the Spines trait.

This trait can be added to your Xero by giving them a Tsamma Melon.
Bobtail

Bobtail (Notable)

Category: Tail Mutation
Species: Xero

Bobtails are a somewhat unusual mutation to see on a Xero. These tails are naturally short, and can be various shapes such as super short nubs, or fluffier bunny or deer-like tails.
