New Flora Discovery: Tidix-C-42B,

Common Name:  Arabian Fire Kelp

Discovery:

Flora was discovered during 2^nd  expedition, by Alpha team.  Bravo had searched discovery area a day earlier, but wrongfully confused discovery with an already categorized species.

Data:  Tidix-C-42B, named “Arabian Fire Kelp” by the discovering surveyor, is a deep, crimson red in color.  This kelp grows near hot pockets at the oceanic floor of the moon, and seems to rely on thermal energy for nutrients. Small, glowing pods exist along the entire length of the plant, and are thought of to be forms of energy storage as well as light sources for fauna that frequent the area.   Attempts to retrieve a sample resulted in a startling discovery: these pods create a small explosion with any attempt to remove them from the kelp stalk.   It seems the kelp leaves are the only samples we can safely retrieve at this time.

Notes:  Tidix-C-42B should not be confused by the less dangerous and more common Tidix-C-42A, “Arabian Sea Kelp.” 

Survey Team Alpha has put in requests for a new submersible, after major damage was sustained to their current unit from attempted sample gathering.
