The last normal morning

Lelu woke up to the phantom pains again.

He slowly rose from his empty bed. He had managed to kick his pillows and blanket off again. The room was warm but sleeping under a blanket just felt right.

The nagging pain on his unexistant arm was taunting him like an alarm. He didn’t usually take his prosthetic off to charge it on the dock, but last night the charging cord was nowhere to be found. His roommate Omppu probably borrowed it again whiteout asking. He had once said to the girl, that it was okay, not wanting the other to know about the phantom pains and worry. It wasn’t like Lelu minded that much. He much rather deal whit the pain than the girl crying.

The cybernetic arm felt warm coming off the charging dock. The moment he put the prosthetic on whit a click and hiss, the pain disappeared. He didn’t remember how it worked. The doctor had talked in length something about nerve ends but Lelu didn’t really listen. He had just pretended, to get out of there fast, to try out his new arm.

Omppu was still asleep. The girl was hidden underneath a pile of blushes and pillows. When the girl moved in, it had only been couple of blushes. Now the pile was too large for all of it to fit on the bed.

Lelu was doing some stretches, keeping an eye on the soft mountain hiding his roommate. Omppu had already been asleep when he came home last night, so he expected the girl to wake up any moment now. Lelu was wrong, Omppu was fully intending to enjoy the full length of the dream she was having.

Lelu lifted his hands up to stretch and heard a soft little crack as tension left his spine. He got couple of more pops out of his long strut whit creative stretches before being done whit the morning stretches.

Lelu clicked on the coffee maker. The water pump of the elaborate machine made some alarming sizzle sounds, that were not normal, but the machine eventually started working as intended, making a strong morning drink for Lelu.

The machine was loud enough to wake Omppu up from her slumber, and a messy nest of pink hairs and a brown face rose from under the colorful fabrics. The girl looked tired or annoyed. Lelu wasn’t sure, or he didn’t care. His brew was ready and it looked good on the green glitter mug that for sure Lelu hadn’t bought.

Omppu blinked slowly, like She was doubting what she was seeing. “Why are you up so early?” She mumbled in her dry morning voice that sounded more like a creaky floor than a person.

Lelu sat on the kitchen counter and sipped slowly his drink. It was too hot to drink properly but Lelu was impatient. “You snored.” He lied, keeping his tone and face as matter of factly as possible.

Omppu frowned. She didn’t believe him for a second, but she didn’t press it. She was tired, both because she was prematurely woken from her sweet sweet dream, and because she felt defeated trying to communicate whit the pink xero. Somehow Omppu always ended up being the one who cried for both of them, and it was getting old.

Omppu was getting too old or tired for this. Possibly both. “I borrowed your charger last night.” She mentioned. Watching closely for a reaction.

Lelu just shrugged. “Ok.”

“I spent the whole night packing.”

Lelu didn’t listen. “Aha... okay.”

“I’m gonna move out tonight”

Lelu nodded slowly. “Aha.” He flipped on a news site on his phone.

Omppu got up and stomped to the kitchen. She stood in front of the larger xero and finally met the green eyes that looked down on her. “Lelu, I’m going to go to the school on Marbla-six I told you about.”

Lelu tilted his head slowly. “You can’t just go to school; you need to get in an-”

“I already got in! The letter is right there!” She pointed on the kitchen isle, where a lone paper was laid in the middle for any by passer to notice. It was hard to miss, but Lelu hadn’t noticed it. “It has been there for a week!” Omppu looked up at the green eyes again. The male xero was stunned, staring back at her whit confusion written on his face.

Lelu saw the familiar tears start form into the others gaze. Then came the sniffles and incoherent babbling. “...I didn’t know how to tell you...” Was the only thing Lelu understood.

Lelu set down his cup, and wrapped his hands around the other. It was the fastest way to shut the other up after all.

The hug worked like a charm, it always did, and soon enough Omppu’s words had a sense behind them again. “I will miss you.”

Lelu chuckled. “Idiot.”

Omppu looked up, at the snickering xero. “Don’t say that...” She whispered, whit wet eyes.

Lelu grabbed Omppus shoulders, and pushed her to stand in front of him. “You won’t have time to miss me! You’ll be drowned on stupid school work and some meaningless drama whit some stupid students that you like after the first week but learn to hate before the first semester is over!”

Omppu couldn’t stop the tears from taking over again. She was crying while laughing at how stupid and so himself Lelu sounded and how she hated to hear him say it all at the same time. “Don’t say that...”

Lelu shook Omppu a bit while he continued. “Maybe you’ll fall in love whit a teacher! Start a scandal and get evicted!”

Omppu shook her head. “I won’t! I’ll be the best student and I’ll become a good photographer!”

Lelu let out a howling laughter. “You’ll be the ‘Teacher, you forgot to ask about our homework’ student! I knew it! You are the worst!”

Omppu looked at Lelu, till he stopped laughing. It took a while, but Omppu had a sour face enough to stop any fun Lelu was having. “What?” He asked annoyed, letting go of Omppu’s shoulders, and gripping the green glitter mug again.

Omppu looked between the mug and Lelu, averting eye contact, to muster the courage to say what she wanted to. “Will you miss me?”

Lelu scoffed. “Don’t be stupid. I’ll get a little break before your images start to take over every news article.” He hid his expression behind the mug. “Idiot...”

Omppu looked at the emotionally reserved xero chugging what must have been way too hot liquid just to avoid the rest of the conversation. “I’ll try not to miss you too.” She promised.
