The blue dasher dragonfly (Pachydiplax longipennis - heh) is common in North America. It’s scientific name actually means “long wings.” Known for their vibrant blue, they actually frost lighter with age.

The European hornet (Vespa crabro) is invasive to North America. They live in paper nests built by plant matter mixed with saliva. They are primarily carnivorous, and hunt other insects like moths and beetles.

The red-spotted purple butterfly (Limenitis arthemis) is native to North America. There are several recognized hybrid wing patterns for this species. The blue coloration pictured is attributed to the astyanax species morph.

The paper wasp (Polistes carolina) is a subfamily of paper wasps found in the southeastern region of North America. They are primarily rust colored and less aggressive than similar species. They build paper nests on woodland structures, and are a frequent culprit for nests on houses.

The blue mistflower (Conoclinium coelestinum) is a small cluster-flowering plant native to North America. It blooms throughout the months of July to November. In wet areas, this hardy plant spreads easily. It’s range even extends into Mexico.
