When it is winter we keep the thermostat low at 65 or lower. We bundle up in warm clothing and blankets, prepare hot teas and other drinks, cook with the oven so it warms the house and heats up delicious food. This will all reduce the amount of natural gas being burned in the furnace to keep us warm. We also reinsulated the attic space so that we do not have as much heat leave the house, it seals in the warmth in the winter, and the cold in the summer. We are thinking about getting plastic to help seal the windows more, and maybe wall insulation to keep more heat in.
